The Goonvean Group’s year of collective charity fundraising

23 July 2024

By Katie Ovenden

Over the past year, the Goonvean Group ethos has grown from strength to strength, with a renewed focus on collaboration, communication, and community. With this solid foundation in place, 2024 was the perfect time to kick start a new challenge – raising money for our chosen charity partners

After reviewing suggestions from across our group, together we have chosen to support Children’s Hospice South West and The Rotherham Hospice. These charities were selected for the amazing, important work they do. Both charities have supported, directly and indirectly, members of our team, and are situated in areas that support our business locations across the South West and beyond.

What we’ve been up to

Since selecting our chosen charities, the Goonvean Group has set to the task of doing some serious fundraising. This has been achieved in a variety of ways, including:

  • the epic Three Peaks Challenge
  • daring skydives
  • the Goonvean Games
  • the Goonvean Summer Raffle
  • a Martial Arts Marathon Dojo Day

Across all events, the Goonvean team have raised in excess of £15,000 so far – an incredible feat that we couldn’t be prouder of.

How will our chosen charities benefit?

The funds raised the Group will be used to help our chosen charities do their incredible work. For Children’s Hospice South West, there a number of ways our funds can be used:

£1000 pays for heat, light and power for one week at a single hospice.

£5000 funds a three-to-four day resilience respite star at a hospice. This funds round the clock specialist medical care and gives their whole family support, care, and rest – enabling them to create memories to cherish forever.

£7000 funds medical consumables for one of the hospices for a year.

£7500 funds a children’s nurse for 2 months.

£12,000 funds a week of end of life care for a family at one of the hospices.

What’s coming next for Goonvean’s charity fundraising?

We booked in a few more volunteers for skydives this September, and have a few more fundraising ideas currently in the pipeline – in which walking might well play a part. The Dura team are planning to tackle the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in 2025, and a Tour de Goonvean bike ride is also on the cards – so watch this space!

A massive congratulations to everyone who participated in the Three Peaks Challenge this year.

Our walkers:
Matthew Gazzard, Lisa Gazzard, Rob Hayes, Jacqui Brownridge, Matt Shaw, Katie Ovenden, Rachel Pearce, Angela Babington, Lichelle Langham, Emily Gaylard, and John Gaylard.

Our drivers:
Jon Mears, Becky Mears, Doug Brownridge, and Louise Darch.

“Goonvean staff and management have jumped out of aeroplanes, climbed the three Peaks, hosted a summer games event – and more. In just 8 months, £15,000 has been raised to help children with life limiting illnesses and their families. We are incredibly grateful for Goonvean’s genuine commitment towards supporting local families. We are excited to see how this wonderful partnership develops in the future.”
