Goonvean joins the Armed Forces Covenant

Goonvean Group are pleased to share that we have officially signed the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC).

What is the Armed Forces Covenant?

The AFC is a public pledge that shows Goonvean’s support for the armed forces community, including veterans, reservists, and military families. The pledge is about recognising the value the armed forces community brings to our businesses and ensuring they face no disadvantage in civilian life.

The GVN: Goonvean Veterans Network

This initiative is being led by the newly created Goonvean Veterans Network (GVN) – a group that will act as the focal point for all veteran-related activity and support across the Group.

The GVN is led by Gareth Williams (Atwell Labellers), Will Cross (Goonvean Core Engineering), and Sandra Sampson (Head of Learning and Development). Each of them has personal ties to the military community. Together, they will help shape our veteran-focused initiatives, from career support to wellbeing.

Veterans bring with them more than just a military background. They are leaders, planners, decision-makers, and team players – often with technical, engineering, or operational skills that fit perfectly into the workplace.

Gareth Williams, a former serviceman himself, reflected: “It’s easy to underestimate what a veteran brings: discipline, adaptability, leadership, and a sense of duty are baked into their DNA. Having the right support in place can help make the transition easier for them and strengthen our business at the same time.”

Goonvean’s AFC signing was witnessed by WO1 Steve Boyle, Corps Career Management Officer, Royal Signals. This was a particularly special moment for Gareth, who knew Steve when he was a Lance Corporal and was his Troop Sergeant. Gareth went on to mentor Steve in those early years and proudly watched his career develop to become Warrant Officer.

Gareth commented: “Despite my departure from the services, Steve and I have remained close friends, and I have followed his career with admiration. It was therefore an honour to host him today as the official witness to Matthew signing the Armed Forces Covenant on behalf of Goonvean Group.”

What’s next for the GVN?

The GVN will explore partnerships with military charities, and opportunities to support those transitioning from service. We’re also open to taking part in career fairs for service leavers, especially locally or in partnership with military units.

If you’re a veteran, reservist, or just want to find out more, feel free to reach out to Gareth, Will or Sandra. We’re also planning a coffee afternoon at Goonvean Group HQ later this year to see who might be interested in joining the network or learning more.
